What does conifer mean?
Conifer means "cone-bearing".
So, what is a cone?
Basically, a cone is stiff scaly flower called a gymnosperm. It possesses either the boy parts or girl parts necessary for plant reproduction. Later in the season, the cones that are still on the evergreen, shrub or yew are NOT the ones with the boy parts. They fall off after pollination, when their services are no longer required.
- Boy Part Cones: Staminate Cones have sacs which contain pollen.
- Girl Part Cones: Pistillate Cones have exposed (naked) ovules.
